The performance is top-notch with its powerful Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU and efficient cores, and the 14-inch touch display is incredibly stable and responsive. One of the Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga’s strongest selling qualities is, without a doubt, its design. At just over three pounds (3.3 lbs or 1.5 kg, to be exact), the all-aluminium structure is rather light, making it heavier than some of its rivals, like the Acer Spin 5 but lighter than others, like the Asus Vivobook Flip 14. 

The 14s Yoga doesn’t have many vents, but it also doesn’t get uncomfortable hot because it isn’t strong enough to significantly raise the temperature. Don’t expect the 14s Yoga to produce excellent sound quality because the speakers aren’t that fantastic, and they also fire downward. This shouldn’t be a top priority given the intended demographic, but for those who insist on having their computer sound loud and clear, you’re definitely better off using some sort of headphones or connecting additional speakers.

Keyboard

In contrast to the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano, the Control and Function keys on the bottom-left side of the keyboard are located where they should be. Even when you are typing quickly on a report, paper, or review until the deadline, the keys are whispered quiet for a laptop of this type and have excellent key travel.

The backlit keyboard feels satisfyingly quick to type on. Its layout is similar to that of many laptops in that it lacks Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys. Instead, those functions are combined with the Fn key and cursor arrows and are arranged in an awkward, HP-style row rather than the appropriate inverted T. Like the top-row Escape and Delete keys, the up and down arrows are too small and difficult to press. Making and finishing Microsoft Teams calls, as well as changing the brightness and volume, are all accessible with the top-row shortcut keys. The medium-sized touchpad has no buttons, and its clicks are a little firm.

Touchpad and Stylus 

The trackpad is quick and smooth, and the silvery trim around the edge gives it a more expensive-looking appearance than it actually is. Additionally, the pad has lots of space, which makes multitouch movements feel more natural than they would on smaller pads.

There are two USB Type-C ports; however, you’ll only be able to use one of them for charging; two USB Type-A ports; an HDMI output connector; a MicroSD card slot; an audio combo jack; and a MicroSD slot. This laptop can do a lot because it has nearly all the ports a 2-in-1 can have when the Kensington lock slot is added.

Display

The Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga Gen 2 comes with a 14-inch touch display with a Full HD resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, ensuring a reasonably clear and balanced viewing experience. Its brightness peaks at 313 nits, which might be slightly dimmer than some of its competitors yet sufficient for indoor use.

Glare might be an issue in brightly lit environments, so outdoor usage is better suited for cloudy days or shaded areas due to its reflective surface.

When it comes to colour accuracy, the ThinkBook 14s Yoga scored 108% on the sRGB colour gamut. This is commendable, although it doesn’t entirely cover the AdobeRGB and sRGB colour spaces, registering at 56% and 89%, respectively.

The Dolby Vision feature ensures decent contrast and detail, but those looking for precision in colour-sensitive work should note the values of dE2000.

The display provides stable viewing angles thanks to its IPS panel. The 10-point touch capabilities add to its responsiveness, and the Gorilla Glass cover offers a layer of protection against scratches and potential damage.

However, professionals who rely heavily on colour precision and outdoor usage might want to consider these factors when evaluating the 14s Yoga Gen 2’s display.

Performance

Now let’s take a deep dive underneath the hood of the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S and get a sense of how well it performs under a variety of stress, power, graphics, and output tests I have specially designed to get the best out of this laptop and see just how good this laptop actually is.

Processor, Memory, and Storage

This laptop comes with either an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor or an Intel Core i5-1135U processor. You can either get it with 8GB or 16GB of RAM (the first stick is soldered to the board, but there is space for the second slot), and at stock design, it comes with a 512GB PCIe SSD, which can be expanded due to the presence of a second slot.

Nowadays, the 14s Yoga is unusual because the majority of new laptops are virtually always Intel Evo certified. Through this certification process, Intel collaborates with laptop makers to verify that performance, security, and energy efficiency meet the high standards set by Intel.

Compared to its closest rival, the HP Spectre x360, the 14S Yoga outperforms the former in every benchmark category. The 14S Yoga recorded higher scores in PCMark 10, Cinebench R23, and Geekbench 5 tests, indicating that it has a smoother, snappier operation and handles multitasking and demanding applications better.

Graphics and Gaming Performance

I utilise two DirectX 12 game simulations from UL’s 3DMark to evaluate the visual performance of Windows computers. Time Spy is more rigorous and better suited for gaming setups with separate GPUs, while Night Raid is more modest and suitable for laptops with integrated graphics.

Furthermore, I conduct two assessments utilising the cross-platform GPU benchmark GFXBench 5, which applies pressure on both advanced, game-like picture rendering and basic duties like texturing. The Car Chase at 1080p and Aztec Ruins at 1440p test graphics and compute shaders using hardware tessellation and OpenGL, respectively. Tests are conducted offscreen to ensure compatibility with various display resolutions. The higher the frames per second (fps), the better.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 14s’ integrated graphics are not even close to the discrete GPUs seen in gaming rigs; therefore, it should only be used for casual gaming and streaming media rather than the newest beat-em-up, fighter, or first-person shooter titles.

Real-world Testing and Benchmark Scores

The primary benchmark of UL’s PCMark 10 suite measures overall performance for office-focused tasks like word processing, spreadsheet work, web browsing, and videoconferencing. It does this by simulating a range of real-world productivity and content-creation processes. We also conduct the Full System Drive test in PCMark 10 to evaluate the throughput and load time of a laptop’s storage.

Three benchmarks test a PC’s ability to handle processor-intensive workloads by focusing on the CPU and using all available cores and threads. Geekbench 5.4 Pro simulates popular programs like PDF rendering and speech recognition, while Cinebench R23 renders a complex scenario using its Cinema 4D engine.

I utilised HandBrake 1.4 to convert a 12-minute 4K video clip to 1080p to achieve faster conversion times. I used PugetBench for Photoshop to assess my PC’s multimedia and content production capabilities. PugetBench for Photoshop utilises Adobe’s Creative Cloud version 22 to measure performance through standard and GPU-accelerated operations such as image resizing, rotating, and saving, as well as using masks, gradient fills, and filters.

In these tests, the Yoga Gen 2 remained near the back of the field. Although it demonstrated that it was more than adequate for daily tasks—clearing the 4,000-point barrier in PCMark 10 that denotes exceptional productivity for Microsoft Office or Google Workspace—its CPU performance was disappointing, in part because the Core i7-1255U only has two Performance cores.

The shorter battery life may be a downside, but for those who prioritise performance, the 14S Yoga is a clear winner.

Battery Life

While the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga Gen 2 boasts impressive performance, its battery life may leave some users disappointed. The battery test I performed on this convertible laptop yielded results of 10 hours and 27 minutes of Web browsing as well as 8 hours and 28 minutes of video playback. These numbers may not be enough to last a full workday for some users.

Under more regular work conditions, the 14S Yoga’s battery life lasts approximately seven hours. This may be enough for some users, but it falls short when compared to other business laptops. However, the power slider feature can be used to extend its battery life by reducing the CPU’s performance.

One notable aspect of the 14S Yoga’s battery performance is its screen brightness. With set brightness levels, the dim display mode can extend battery life. The power-efficient display and the presence of the lock slot and fingerprint reader contribute to the laptop’s power-saving feature.

Overall, while the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga Gen 2’s battery life may not be the best among business convertibles, it delivers what you need under regular working conditions and features power-saving capabilities to extend its battery life.

Software

I’m pleased to report that there wasn’t much bloatware on this laptop compared to some Windows laptops that it comes standard with.

The 2-in-1 device has note-taking apps, Lenovo Pen Settings, and allows writing notes on the locked screen, which is handy for jotting down information quickly.

Operating System and Included Software

Lenovo includes advertisements for various subscription services, such as Smart Performance, Smart Privacy, and Smart Lock antitheft, when preloading the Windows 11 Pro operating system. Additionally, their AI Meeting Manager program offers real-time transcripts during video conferencing for a fee, along with translation and subtitles.

Overall, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga Gen 2’s operating system and included software are impressive, without any unwanted distractions. Lenovo has focused on providing features that will enhance the overall user experience, making this laptop a fantastic choice for anyone in search of a high-performance device.

User Experience: Performance, Stability, and Compatibility

They’re joined by a USB 3.2 Type-A port, an HDMI video output, and an audio jack.

A second USB-A port and a microSD card slot are on the right, along with the power button, a security lock slot, and a garage for the supplied pen. These ports make it possible to connect to multiple devices simultaneously while enjoying fast data transfer and charging speeds.

And don’t forget about the laptop’s fingerprint reader, which is located on the power button on the side of the laptop, allowing users to utilise it in multiple orientations and providing a seamless and secure way to log in to their account.

Webcam and Microphone Quality

The webcam and microphone quality on the 14S are just alright, with nothing special going on. The webcam boasts a resolution of 720p, allowing for clear and basic video conferencing and online meetings.

The microphone on the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S is equally basic, providing clear sound quality. During my testing, I found the microphone on the 14S to be clear and audible but very base-heavy when I used to talk with my editor.

To access and configure these features, simply download the Lenovo Vantage app. Within the app, you’ll be able to adjust the camera and microphone settings to your desired preferences. With just a few clicks, you’ll have the ability to customise the resolution, focus type, and noise-cancelling capabilities of these features.

Overall, the webcam and microphone quality on the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S makes it a solid option for anyone who relies heavily on video conferencing and online communication; however, don’t expect it to make you look like Oscar Isaac or Beyoncé during your Zoom meetings.

Audio and Speakers

One downside to the speaker placement, however, is that they’re located on the bottom of the device. This means that the speakers aren’t as effective when the laptop is placed on a soft surface like a bed or couch. In noisy environments, you may need to increase the volume to hear clearly, which can strain your ears if you’re using the device for prolonged periods.

Overall, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S Yoga Gen 2 offers a great audio experience thanks to its dual 2W Harman speakers and Dolby Audio enhancement. Just be mindful of the speaker placement when using the device on soft surfaces, and take care not to crank up the volume too high in noisy environments.

As far as I’m concerned, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14s Yoga is a solid laptop that is worth being called in the same breath as the ThinkPads and Legions of Lenovo’s catalogue. While it may provide a cheaper and less expensive option to the more established brands. The ThinkBook 14s Yoga is definitely going to be a mainstay for Lenovo. 

I’ve been impressed with Lenovo’s attention to detail with the design of this laptop; it’s been designed well and has been given a proper paint job in its now famous abyss blue. The 11th Gen processor inside it gives it a very big boost in performance, and the addition of two PCIe M.2 SSD slots was a nice touch. 

However, this laptop is not all sunshine and rainbows, as it does have a few drawbacks. Especially in the power section. A lack of Intel EVO certification is a bit worrying, and that shows up in my battery tests, as without an Intel EVO certification, its power consumption is very inefficient. The display on the laptop may be excellent and very colour accurate, but it is also not the brightest display, which is honestly a bit of a letdown.

On the whole, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14S is a very good laptop, but it has a few drawbacks. However, these drawbacks are far outweighed by the good things this laptop has going for it and because of those improvements. I am happy to recommend this laptop to anyone who needs it.
