Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max Review Pros and Cons

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max is last of the new iPhone 12 series which is so far the widest range ever released by Apple Inc. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the largest screen and brightest display of all the flagship series with a 6.7” Super Retina XDR display and Ceramic Shield in front in place of the glass used in the earlier versions.

The Ceramic Shield is said to be stronger than any smartphone glass and offers 4x screen protection. It has an improved IP68 water resistance and comes in four matte colors; Pacific Blue, Gold, Silver, and Graphite.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max Design

The iPhone 12 Pro Max much like the iPhone 12 Pro has a beautifully curved flat rectangular chassis, a design used for the previous-generation iPhone. It has the Ceramic shield screen protection in front, glass back and a polished stainless steel frame wrapped around it giving it a shiny look. It measures 3.07 x 6.33 x 0.29 inches and weighs 228g.

Its primary camera has the largest sensor on any iPhone to date. It has three 12MP rear cameras (ultra-wide, wide, telephoto) in a squared shape with a LIDAR scanner and one 12MP front camera. All these cameras take nice low-light photography with the use of Night mode and captures Dolby Vision videos.

On the left side it has two volume keys beneath the silent mode switch and the power/lock key is on the right side. It has the mouthpiece, lightning port and stereo speaker on the bottom.

Display

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 6.7 inches Super Retina XDR all-screen OLED display, 2778 x 1284pixel resolution at 458ppi, with up to 800nits (typical) and 1200nits (peak) brightness for photos and videos which enhances true-tones and wide colors. It supports the display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously.

Performance and Battery life

Apple iPhone12 Pro Max offers the same new A14 Bionic chipset as all the other iPhone 12 series. It supports the use of the latest 5G network which gives this latest iPhones superfast speed and great performance when browsing the internet or streaming high-quality HDR movies online on congested networks.

The cameras on the iPhone 12 Pro Max all supports the use of Night mode. The Night mode feature makes it possible to take detailed low light pictures and the LIDAR sensor delivers faster autofocus and detailed portraits at night.

Pictures taken in brightly lit places are a lot more detailed with everything maintaining its color whether it’s a vivid color or a subtle color. It is the first camera to record and edit a video in Dolby Vision with improved noise reduction for more detail.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the new Apple ProRAW file format that gives you all the raw details of the shot taken so that you can have all the creative control you want when editing.

The Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with a 3687mAh built-in lithium-ion battery. The battery on this device is larger than that of the iPhone 12 Pro therefore lasts a little longer. The iPhone 12 Pro Max supports MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W, Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W and can get up to 50% charge in about 30 minutes with a 20W charging adapter.

Also, there is an obvious drop in battery when using 5G network compared to using 4G which is likely why Apple has included a smart data mode that slows 5G speeds to 4G levels if 5G isn’t needed.

How much is Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max?

The iPhone 12 Pro Max much like other iPhones has a price list based on the storage size with the least being 128GB at $1099.

128 GB256 GB512 GB
$1099$1199$1399
£1099£1199£1399
€1259€1379€1609

The starting price of iPhone 12 Pro Max is about $100 higher than the iPhone 12 Pro.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max Available series

Alongside the iPhone 12 Pro Max came three other series; iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. They come with the same OS and processor but have different display sizes and performance. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 for example both have 4GB RAM and storage begins at 64GB but Apple takes it higher with the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max with 6GB RAM and a base storage of 128GB.

Buying guide

The new iPhone 12 Pro Max only comes with the device and a fast charging USB-C lightning cable in the box which obviously means you would have to get a new power adapter if you do not have an old one. It is also good to know that you would need a phone case to cover this exquisite device because without a case, you would be doing a lot of cleaning on the stainless steel frame as it attracts smudges and gets scratched easily.

Is Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max worth buying?

With 5G connectivity to download large files on the go and stream HDR video, larger sensor, A14 Bionic chip, a 6.7-inch OLED display, Ceramic Shield with 4x better drop protection, the best Pro camera system on an iPhone, water and dust resistant, Dolby Vision video recording and editing, Night mode portraits and new MagSafe accessories for faster wireless charging, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is definitely a good buy.

Conclusion

In conclusion, when compared to the iPhone 12 pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max is worth the extra $100.  Aside the fact that the stainless steel frame is a glue for fingerprints, it also affects the grip of the phone giving it a slippery feel. So the question now is would you be able to manage a phone like that without a case? or would  you even want to use a case for a device this outstanding or this expensive?
