Is the Huawei P50 Pro Camera Good?

The Huawei P50 Pro camera is highly regarded for its exceptional quality and performance. Launched in August 2021, the P50 Pro features a powerful camera system that delivers outstanding depth, detail, and sharpness in the images it captures.

This impressive camera performance makes the phone a popular choice among photography enthusiasts and casual users alike. While the Huawei P50 Pro may not be the most advanced features when compared to some of the latest smartphones on the market, its camera is a significant upgrade from previous models, and it competes well with other top-tier devices.

Key elements such as low-light capabilities, accurate colour reproduction, and fast autofocus contribute to the camera’s overall excellence, making it a reliable option for those who prioritise photography in their smartphone selection.

Comparison of the Huawei P50 Pro camera with other smartphone cameras

When it comes to smartphone cameras, there are a variety of options available in the market that should be considered, depending on your budget and desired camera features. Here’s a list of some of the phones that can be compared to the Huawei P50 Pro in terms of camera performance:

  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra: With a 108-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and two 10-megapixel sensors for telephoto and periscope zoom, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has a quadruple rear camera system. The Galaxy S21 Ultra has more megapixels and a more adaptable camera system than the Huawei P50 Pro.
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: The triple back camera system on the iPhone 13 Pro Max consists of a 12-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor. The Huawei P50 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max are quite comparable in terms of colour accuracy and low-light performance.
  • Google Pixel 6 Pro: The Google Pixel 6 Pro has a triple rear camera system with a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 48-megapixel telephoto sensor. The Pixel 6 Pro is known for its superb computational photography features, which produce detailed and colour-accurate images.

While the Huawei P50 Pro does not have the highest megapixel count or most versatile camera setup compared to some of its competitors, it still stands out for its exceptional depth and detail in images, particularly in low-light conditions. The phone’s night mode is also an impressive feature that sets it apart from the competition.

Image quality and performance of the Huawei P50 Pro camera

The soundness in quality of the Huawei P50 Pro’s camera makes it good for still object capturing and video recording. Capturing objects in motion gives a blurry effect which could appeal to some users.

The rear and front cameras are highly optimized during the day as the presence of daylight makes capturing easy – from object identification and camera positioning to zoom range. The quality of images obtained when you take photos during the day is different from that of the night mode. The white balance, dynamic range, contrast, and other details can be easily spotted in daylight photos because the camera harnesses the brightness of daylight.

The camera is restricted to the dual-LED flash for capturing brighter images, yet it works better with ambient light. Natural night light has less intensity than daylight and is well-saturated around objects. This makes capturing at night interesting, as you can identify objects and take your best shot.

The image quality of the night mode photos is different in contrast and white balance, and the colours are well-managed by the lens of the camera.

Video recording capabilities of the Huawei P50 Pro camera

The video recording capability of the Huawei P50 Pro is still solid and complements the camera performance, suitable not just for video recordings but quality videos. The quad setup of the main camera can record in three modes or qualities – 4k videos at 30fps, 1080 pixels at 30/40/60fps, and 1080pixels at 960fps with gyro-EIS support for image stabilisation.

If you want lesser video quality, you can make adjustments to the settings of the camera. The selfie camera also has video recording capability of 4K video quality at 30fps and 1080 pixels at 30/60/240fps. The gyro-EIS is an electronic image stabilisation feature that enables the steadiness of the camera while recording or taking photos.

Low light photography and night mode on the Huawei P50 Pro camera

The depth of the lens of the Huawei P50 Pro’s camera allows you to take better photos in low-light conditions. This produces incredibly cool colour temperature and details. Lowlight photography can be effective when the night mode is enabled. Night conditions see more artificial lighting. This works with camera depth to give you amazing video recordings and photos.

The dual-LED flash can be used in low light conditions if you choose not to take photos with the ambient light (light from the object’s surroundings). The ambient light around the object helps you identify the position of the object and how best to take the shot or recording. With the Night mode, colour does not depreciate; rather, the image comes out with details.

Zoom capabilities and telephoto lens of the Huawei P50 Pro camera

At 1x zoom, the main camera gives you a default 12.5MP photo quality with no noise and even colour temperature. It also has 2x and 3x zoom that provides a closer view and softens portrait photos. The ultrawide camera supports autofocus, which allows you to shoot macro images. The 3.5x zoom gives you a 16MP photo quality, thanks to the OIS 90 mm lens.

For the 10x zoom in the Huawei P50 Pro, the photos are saved in 12.5MP to make it look upscaled with excellent sharpness, contrast, white balance, dynamic range, and noise reduction.

There are other zoom ranges possessed by the Huawei P50 Pro’s camera, but the 1x, 3.5x, and 10x zoom ranges are benchmarks for photo comparison on the phone.

Front-facing camera and selfie features of the Huawei P50 Pro

The front-facing (selfie) camera is located at the top of the display screen along the top bezel. It is a 13MP wide (f/2.4, AF) camera that gives you a quality selfie image during the day and at night. Its performance is enhanced by the Panorama and HDR features.

The panorama feature enables you to capture more than one scene at a time. Your lens angle may not be wide enough to cover multiple scenes at a time. The panorama helps you cover more from a stationary point. The HDR feature helps expand the tonal detail of the image. It enhances exposure and technically creates tonal balance across the object or the scene captured.

Apart from photos, these features are also applicable to video recordings. They improve the details of the image or scene captured.

Camera software and user interface of the Huawei P50 Pro

The Huawei P50 Pro comes with system applications which include the camera application. The camera application is available for use even when your P50 Pro is locked. This is accessible from the lock screen. In other words, you can make use of the camera while the phone is locked.

The camera software has a relatable user interface. Changes in image quality, shutter speed, shutter capture noise, timing, and other options for your camera can be adjusted or activated via the camera settings. The LED flash can be turned on if required. Once the camera app is opened, the flash icon shows at the top corner of your screen, and a tap on it turns it auto, on, or off.

In auto mode, the camera sensor detects when and where more light is needed, and the LED flash comes on as soon as you click to take the shot. For video recordings at night hours, the flash comes on automatically as soon as you click the record button.

The grids on the camera interface help you maintain good proportions between the object being captured and the object’s environment. It can be turned on/off in the camera settings. The camera does not have hidden features and settings that cannot be easy to identify and altered. The best way to know how these settings work is to take a photo or video record after each adjustment.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Huawei P50 Pro smartphone offers one of the best qualities of mobile photography – depth. The quad main camera provides an exceptional level of depth and detail in a single image, allowing users to see beyond colours and capture amazing realistic shots. The phone’s Night mode is particularly impressive, harnessing ambient light to retain colour, details, and depth even in low-light conditions.

If you are on the lookout for a phone that is capable of meeting the basic needs of mobile photography, then the P50 Pro by Huawei is a top choice.
