Google Wallet Adds Real-Time Train Alerts Ahead of I/O 2025

Google Wallet’s latest update brings real-time train status notifications to users in India and Canada, introducing a significant enhancement for rail travelers. The feature delivers instant updates about train delays, cancellations, and departure times directly to users’ lock screens and within the Wallet interface.

This advancement represents a major shift in how travelers interact with digital train tickets. Users of Indian Railways and Via Rail can now view live train statuses on their Google Wallet cards, with notifications appearing both on the Wallet homepage and in the full ticket view. Lock screen alerts ensure passengers stay informed without needing to unlock their devices.

According to Google, the system actively notifies users about train delays and provides revised schedules, addressing a crucial need for rail travelers, particularly in regions where train delays are common. The implementation relies on direct API integrations with rail operators, setting it apart from basic calendar notifications.

Alongside this transit-focused update, Google has enhanced its web platform capabilities. Users worldwide can now add Loyalty Program and Gift Card passes through wallet.google.com, matching the functionality previously available only in the mobile app. The platform also supports upgrading manual loyalty passes to API-integrated versions through enrollment programs.

The timing of these updates precedes Google’s I/O 2025 developer conference, scheduled for May, where the company has teased upcoming changes to Google Wallet and Google Pay. This aligns with Google’s established pattern of announcing major Wallet and Pay updates at their annual developer conference.

Technical implementation details reveal the scale of this undertaking, particularly with Indian Railways’ network of over 13,000 daily passenger trains serving as a comprehensive test of the system’s reliability. The Canadian implementation through Via Rail focuses primarily on long-distance routes where real-time updates have the most significant impact.

For the developer community, the enhanced Loyalty Program Enrollment API now supports web-based pass upgrades, creating new opportunities for merchant integrations and reinforcing Google’s commitment to cross-device functionality.
